Re: brexit - relevance coaching psychology?
Hi Tio,
This is an important question. From the SILM® perspective, coaching psychology should not focus solely on the individual as a health professional might when conducting a psychological intervention. The concern is as much about the individual or group’s situation in the World.
Further, the way that humans exist in the World is not like a rock or tree, they are complex interactions, not just complicated relationships that vary from individual to individual, culture to culture, country to country. Being complex means that relatively small events can initiate dramatic and sometimes sudden change.
The 'Brexit' referendum is one such singular event, a throw of the dice, for which no one could possibly predict the long-term outcome. But the lives of millions people will undoubtedly be changed forever, as will the worlds that they arbitrarily construct. SILM® research has shown that people differ in the extent to which they apply various skills. Developing creativity and strategic planning, to encourage flexibility in managing change and opportunity, may well contribute toward success and fulfilment with wellbeing.

Re: brexit - relevance coaching psychology?
The Supreme Court ruling of 24th January 2017 illustrates a "shift" from one mode to another in the SILM® dynamic. The vote for leave in the referendum reflected the collective experience and beliefs of a majority of individuals, possibly influenced by a charismatic leader, appealing to emotion.
The shift now is to the political and legal structures of the arbitrary World that the majority of individuals in a democracy cannot change. How these structures are played out by the different parties will interesting.
