'The Apprentice'; changes in personality?

Post by silmcoach »

The current series of 'The Apprentice' (BBC Television) has revealed some quite dramatic “before and after” changes. On the follow-up programme, 'The Apprentice; Your Fired', it is not unusual to see changes in the hairstyles and dress of some candidates, but in some cases their personalities seem to be dramatically transformed as well.

Hogan and Hogan (2009) developed the Hogan Development Survey (HDS). Fico et al (2008) explain that keeping positive qualities from becoming deficits is a central theme when providing executive coaching with the HDS. The HDS includes eleven scales that are designed to measure behaviours such as Excitable, Skeptical, Cautious, etc. The scales further cluster into the three relationship styles, labelled Moving Away, Moving Against and Moving Toward, that can become more prevalent when individuals are experiencing stress in challenging situations. The Hogan Manual (2009) explains that Moving Against can be a method for dealing with insecurity. Under normal circumstances a person scoring high on some or all of the four Moving Against scales Bold, Mischievous, Colourful and Imaginative can be ‘Social, self-confident, impulsive, energetic, competitive with a talent for self-display’. However, under stress high scorers tend to be ‘overwhelming, co-opting, intimidating, persuading, and manipulative’. This explanation perhaps offers some insight into the change in behaviour of some candidates appearing in 'The Apprentice'.
